Yes, study anatomy, color and drawing. Draw from live models not photos, drawing from photos will give you bad habits and generalizations when observing. You need to spend time drawing from life and 3D objects to train your eye to see correctly. Study color, so that you know how it will optically mix when applied to the canvas. Start with a limited palette when painting, I usually start my students on monochromatic paintings and then a palette of one red, one blue and one yellow, black and white so they learn how to mix color on the palette and the canvas.
